Lighting fireworks
You can light fireworks only on private property, in a safe and considerate manner.
Fireworks are not allowed in public places unless the council has given prior approval.
Some simple tips to follow:
· Do not light fireworks in windy or dry conditions.
· Follow handling instructions carefully.
· Have access to water or fire extinguishers handy when you light fireworks.
· Do not point at any person, property or vegetation.
· Always have an adult present.
· Avoid using fireworks late into the evening and be considerate of your neighbours.
· Keep pets inside or move animals to avoid stress.
· As a courtesy, try to let your neighbours know in advance.
If you experience excessive and unreasonable noise from fireworks after 11.00pm, call Noise Control on 0800 766 700 for assistance.
Workshop for food businesses
New food safety law – the Food Act 2014 - is now in effect. Do you know what changes you need to make and when? Are you worried about using a food control plan, or not sure what a national programme means?
This workshop will help you understand what the new law means for your business, and work out what you need to do to follow it. Staff from the Ministry for Primary Industries and the three Wairarapa Councils will be at the workshop to answer your questions.

New Zealand Citizenship Ceremony
On Thursday 27th October Carterton District Council Mayor John Booth led the New Zealand Citizenship ceremony which was held in the Te Mahau Foyer at the Carterton Events Centre.
Hurunui o Rangi Marae supported by Akonga Maori at Carterton School welcomed the new citizens with a heartfelt powhiri.
After each citizen read their Affirmation of Allegiance, they were presented with their Citizenship Certificate and a Harakeke plant.

Inaugural meeting of the Carterton District Council and election of Deputy Mayor
Wednesday 26th October 2016
Newly elected members were officially welcomed today at the inaugural meeting of Carterton District Council which was preceded with a moving powhiri from Hurunui o Rangi Marae and Akonga Maori Carterton School.
Chief Executive Jane Davis officially opened the meeting at the Carterton Events Centre with declarations of the Mayor and councillors following.
Councillor Russell Keys was elected as Deputy Mayor, whom was unopposed in the nominations.
Carterton District Council Staff welcome the new council and look forward to working with them during this term.

CREATIVE COMMUNITIES SCHEME
The Creative Communities Scheme is a relationship between Creative NZ and the Carterton District Council to support a wide range of community arts projects including: Craft/Object arts, Dance, Interarts, Literature, Ngā Toi Māori, Multidisciplinary artforms, Music, Pacific arts, Theatre and Visual arts.
The Carterton District Council administers two funding rounds each financial year:
- Round 1 closes 4th November 2016
- Round 2 closes 28th April 2017

Retiring Councillors acknowledged
On Wednesday 5th October retiring Carterton District councillors, Deputy Mayor Elaine Brazendale and Cr Bill Knowles attended their last ordinary council meeting after serving for 21 years and 15 years respectively.
It was business as usual throughout the council meeting with both councillors contributing their valued opinions on community matters; the helm was then handed over to present their Valedictory Speeches.
Cr Bill Knowles reflected on this time with Carterton council with good humour and anecdotal flair. Bills forte whilst on council was roading, foot paths and Sparks Park. He acknowledged the great working relationship he had formed with the council operation crews. Bill spoke of his most memorable achievements as councilor, and which he was most proud of; “The roundabout at Memorial Square and what we have finally achieved with our footpaths.” Bill noted that although he will no longer be on council he will still continue with his commitment to Foodbank, Keep Carterton Beautiful and the development of Sparks Park.
Cr Elaine Brazendale was first elected to council in 1995 after a transition from the Hospital Board. To Elaine the transition was positive, “District Council papers seemed a breeze after the reams of paper from Health Boards and being close to home much easier to understand.” During her time as a councillor she has had five very diverse mayors, four CEO's, worked with up to 20 councilors, seen the completion of the first District Plan, and developed the first Long Term Plan and Vision for Carterton. This Vision for Carterton also includes one of Elaine’s most memorable achievements, “in February 2011 one of the highlights of these years came when as chair of the CDCT we were able to make a donation of $200,000 towards the soon to be Events Centre.”
Parting gifts were presented to Bill and Elaine, exquisite photographs of Carterton Landscape, with engraved plaques recognising their duration and commitment to Carterton District Council.
Mayor John Booth summed up the council meeting with admiration for these two extraordinary individuals who will be missed within the council chambers.

Carterton Holiday Programme
The Carterton District Council is excited to announce its free holiday programme being held at the Carterton Events Centre from 3rd – 7th October, 9 – 3pm.
Children can choose from a huge range of workshops including hula hooping, abseiling, sports, board games, inflatable obstacle course, storytelling, gardening, writing, drama, paper making, wood pallet crafts, web coding, 3D printing, cooking, movies, and painting.
The programme finale will be a disco party with DJ Brenny.
Morning tea of fruit and baking is provided. Children will need to bring their own lunch – please make healthy choices with no chocolate, soft drinks or lollies.
